Who's we?
Pressurge started out in the summer of 2000 as a hobby-project of it's modest anonymous founder [best known by his digital alter-ego
Urgie
] and quickly gained momentum and support by freelance journalists in Europe's Low Countries.
At the time most freelancers felt victimized by their publishers, who were demanding their copyrights for reuse of articles on websites, archives or distribution on cd-roms. The publishing firms offered an average 3 percent tariff increase in return.
Recently, publishers have come to rely more-and-more on both freelancers and digital content to keep their profits up and shareholders happy. A substantial fee for reuse therefore seems justified. Until Pressurge started, no inviting alternatives for redistribution were available to freelance authors.
Today, Pressurge intends to offer authors around the world a fair, cheap and easy opportunity to cash in on their new and 'second-hand' work.
This site has been running in Dutch for a few months now (X-mas 2000) and a fair number of journalists registered. We've also found that there are more professionals who depend on writing for a living. So academics are equally welcome to join and get their articles distributed as well.
The last couple of months gave us ample experience and more-than-enough confidence to translate the site. The problems we're facing in Europe's Low Countries turn out to be problems freelance authors face around the globe.
So if you - just like us - want to keep control over your articles and being paid for that, Pressurge is the bunch to join. You can leave any time you want, it's free and it's working...
