Tell ya mum
Activists or couch-potatoes?

By Hans Buitelaar

Nerds, activists and artists are the visionaries to retain the internet as a medium that can make a difference. At net.congestion, an international festival of streaming media held in Amsterdam, the Netherlands, October 6th to 8th, the future of internet free medium was at stake. Nowadays, campaigners are pioneers in the use of streaming audio and video on the web. Commerce is at their tail however, trying to make the web a medium for entertainment.
"We have the tools for making independent media now," project director Brian Drolet of FreeSpeech TV says. "If we struggle to make ourselves an undeniable part of the media landscape now, independent media might be here to stay."
On the other hand, the world can not be changed from a computer screen. "While free spirits are sharing all kinds of information through tactical use of their computers, companies and governments need to be blocked," says Greenpeace digital campaigner Gilberto Cutrupi. "Are we creating activists or couch-potatoes?"
